Shania, Eminem rule Cdn. charts
By JOHN WILLIAMS
Senior Editor, JAM! Showbiz

Canadian country queen Shania Twain struck a chord with early Christmas shoppers on this week's album charts.

The Timmins, ON native's "Greatest Hits" disc edged out Eminem to capture the No. 1 spot in Canada, selling 92,600 copies of her "Greatest Hits" disc, the highest debut of the year, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

Eminem, whose rise to the top was hampered by an Internet leak, checked in at No. 2. "Encore," which was rush-released worldwide on Friday, racked up a three-day sales total of 74,300.

Eminem's last album, 2002's "The Eminem Show," landed at No. 1 with 79,700 copies sold, but had a full week to compile those numbers.

Shania and Slim Shady also battled it out south of the border, with Eminem coming out as the victor in the U.S., according to Billboard.com. "Encore" landed at No. 1, moving 711,000 copies, while Twain placed No. 2, selling 530,000.

Britney Spears's "Greatest Hits" also made a foray for the top of the charts, landing at No. 3, although the pop princess was well back with opening sales of 20,400.

The three debuts forced Rod Stewart's golden-oldies album, "Stardust... The Great American Songbook: Volume III," from No. 1 to No. 4, while the seasonal compilation "MuchDance 2005" landed at No. 5.

Hilary Duff's self-titled effort remained at No. 6., the collection "Big Shiny Tunes 9" checked in at No. 7, and Toby Keith's "Greatest Hits: Volume 2" premiered at No. 8.

Simple Plan's sophomore effort, "Still Not Getting Any...," dropped five rungs to No. 9 and Green Day's "American Idiot" held onto No. 10.

Other notable debuts included Elton John's "Peachtree Road" at No. 11, Andrea Bocelli's "Andrea" at No. 21, Bee Gees "Number Ones" at No. 26, Ja Rule's "R.U.L.E." at No. 34, Michel Rivard at No. 35, Fabolous's "Real Talk" at No. 40, and Seal's "Greatest Hits" at No. 43.

Back in the U.S., Toby Keith captured the third spot, followed by Britney Spears in fourth, and the compilation "Now 17" in fifth.
