U2, Green Day record Saints tune
By BILL HARRIS -- Toronto Sun

After inspiring the New Orleans Saints to victory, U2 and Green Day hope to inspire the world to help rebuild the battered bayou city's musical culture.

And considering the usual lowly state of the Saints, perhaps the hardest part is over!

U2 and Green Day have combined to produce a studio-recorded version of The Saints Are Coming.

The song will be available for download on Oct. 30, and a CD single will be in stores on Nov. 7.

The two super-groups performed a live version of The Saints Are Coming prior to the Saints-Atlanta Falcons game on Monday Night Football earlier this week. It was the first NFL game back at the New Orleans Superdome since Hurricane Katrina devastated the city in 2005, and on Monday the Saints throttled the Falcons in surprisingly convincing fashion.

The Saints Are Coming originally was recorded by a Scottish punk band called the Skids in 1978.

U2 and Green Day's studio version was produced by Rick Rubin and recorded at the legendary Abbey Road studios in London, England.

Proceeds from the song will aid Music Rising, a charity working with musicians affected by Hurricane Katrina. The charity was set up by The Edge of U2, producer Bob Ezrin and Gibson Guitars, and the goal is to replace musical instruments lost during Hurricane Katrina.

"My visits to New Orleans gave me a first-hand look at the devastation which tragically destroyed the lives of thousands," The Edge said in a statement. "The area's rich and spirited culture must continue to be restored.

"When the idea of playing at the Superdome re-opening first came up, I immediately thought of The Saints Are Coming. It could have been written for this occasion. The lyric fits so well, it's almost eerie."

Added Green Day singer Billie Joe Armstrong: "One year later, people continue to be devastated by Katrina's effects. We hope that by collaborating with U2, we'll remind the public that people of the Gulf Coast are still suffering and still need help to rebuild their lives."
