There are some musicians who tour constantly and release CD after CD in short succession because they know if they slow down and take a break, the world will forget them.
(I'm looking at you Backstreet ... um, Guys or Dudes or whatever you were called.)
And then there are those few who genuinely love what they do and work hard at it because to not give it all they've got would be an insult to their fans, not to mention a giant step towards taking for granted something very few people could ever hope to experience.
Andrew W.K. is one of those musicians who has a lust for life and an affinity for living in the red.
That's why when he plays tomorrow night at the Back Alley -- now a good year into the non-stop promotion and touring of his debut CD, I Get Wet -- not giving it all he has won't even be an option.
"I don't know anything else," he says. "This, to me, is everything."
As a result, not only will the show be full-tilt, but expect the hairy, pop headbanger to stick around afterwards and interact with the crowd until the last fan has left the building -- with no complaints.
"That's what we do and that's what this is," he says.
"It's not playing songs -- it's living on behalf of living.
"Any time that I can see an opportunity to work harder or do more, that is what we'll do ...
"This is heaven on earth, and to ever get tired of it is a disrespect to it itself and, even more, a disrespect to all of those people who would give anything to live a day in this life."
Any one day out of Andrew W.K.'s life since he blew up first in the U.K. -- before his album was even released there -- seems the stuff of dreams.
He's had heavily rotated MTV singles such as Party Hard and I Love NYC, commercials, an appearance on Saturday Night Live and a spot on the lineup of this year's Ozzfest tour on the invite of Sharon and Ozzy Osbourne.
The latter highlight of the Michigan-bred musician's young career produced another notable that should keep him in the spotlight until he heads back into the studio to record a followup in October.
W.K. is joined by Ozzy's daughter Kelly Osbourne on the song She Is Beautiful, which is featured on the recently released Ozzfest live album.
The track came about after he'd met Kelly and her brother Jack at one of his own shows in New York and then saw her again when she was hanging around the Ozzfest tour.
Inviting her to sing with him was yet another example of how he's willing to go above and beyond to give a little bit back.
"It was a way of saying thank you to her and her family for letting us play," he says.
