Martha Wainwright

(MapleMusic)
Kate and Loudon's talented daughter has been hounding the record labels since before brother Rufus, whining about how she could play with the big boys too, given half a chance.
Two self-released EPs later, Wainwright arrives with a collection of original songs that back up her boasts better than anyone but her could have imagined.
This self-titled album comes as close to pop-music perfection as any album has a right to, showcasing a major talent who has turned her onstage Piaf persona into sugar-coated gritty tales of frustration, self-doubt and ultimate victory.
The music ranges from compelling drone-based folk songs to the brash rocker Ball & Chain, and wraps up nicely with a traditional melody worthy of mom and Auntie Anna. Throughout, the band wisely keeps its distance until Wainwright deems it safe for them to come in.
The boys may be stronger and run faster, as the singer-songwriter notes in one song, but they're not making better records.
