COMBING THE CLOUDS
The Waking Eyes
(Endearing Records)
Utter brilliance.
Search high, search low, you'd be hard pressed to find a retro rock record executed as flawlessly as this Nugget of neo-psychedelic perfection.
With The Guess Who as a starting point -- where else would you expect some good ol' Winnipeg kids to begin from? -- The Waking Eyes revisit the obvious late '60s studio stomping grounds of rock and roll's holy trinity of B bands: The Beatles, Byrds and Beach Boys.
It's pieced together expertly -- jam-packed with all of the little added touches, the sonic highs and lows, the wonderfully superfluous features that made albums such as Sgt. Pepper's and Pet Sounds the epic aural works of art they are.
And The Waking Eyes do it all with pure wide-eyed affection instead of smug tongue in cheekiness.
You can't fake that.
Seamlessly jumping stylistically from the Burton Cummings covering Live and Let Die sound of Gone With a Glance, to the rousing oompah pop of Definitely Elwood, and the revival tent gospel rock of Sunday Morning Blues, the album's played as a love letter instead of a larff.
It's a love letter worth signing for.
If you had too much to dream last night, your eyes and ears will love waking up to Combing the Clouds.
