DAYS OF SPEED
Paul Weller
Epic / Sony)

After you've led punk pioneers The Jam, fronted soul-popsters The Style Council and had a decently successful solo career, what else is there to do? Well, if you're Paul Weller, the answer is to hang up the electric guitar - and pick up the acoustic. Which is pretty much what he does on Days of Speed, a live unplugged album that finds the Britrock veteran revisiting tunes from throughout his lengthy career, armed with only six strings and his well-weathered, soulful voice. And while newer fare like the jazzy Science (one of the few electric numbers) and Back in the Fire show Weller hasn't lost his touch, the real treats here are Jam classics like English Rose, Town Called Malice and That's Entertainment. Sure is.
