One can expect an American living overseas to feel somewhat dispossessed. And a lonely, uncaring world does rear its head in Chris Whitley's latest album, Hotel Vast Horizon, as the singer-songwriter tells of "deception in a western light" and "the new lost world." But the true place of Whitley in our lost world is best summed up in the opening stanza of the bleak Assassin Song.
"I come from far away," the Texas-born Whitley croons over a dissonant backing. "Anywhere I am is home."
