Album Review: Wilco

KICKING TELEVISION: LIVE IN CHICAGO
Live Wilco superb
By -- Calgary Sun

Wilco
Kicking Television: Live in Chicago
(Nonesuch/Warner)

More and more it becomes apparent that -- unless you're KISS, Cheap Trick or Queen -- all live rock albums should be recorded sans audience.

Why? Well, to quote Sloan -- "It's not the band I hate, it's their fans."

Or more specifically, the way the fans act in a live setting.

Look no further than Wilco's otherwise wonderful two-disc Kicking Television, which features the country rockers in front of an incredibly vocal, woo-wooing-at-everything hometown Chicago crowd.

Anyone who's seen the band live knows it brings out the best in them and their material -- and the performances, culled from a four-night stand, are all superb.

The Late Greats, I Am Trying To Break Your Heart, I'm the Man Who Loves You, Hummingbird, Ashes of American Flags, Spiders (Kidsmoke) -- it's all vital, all so alive and independent of the studio versions.

It reminds you why you love the band.

And then the song ends.

And you're reminded why you hate the fans.
