Album Review: Workman, Hawksley

ALMOST A FULL MOON
By KIERAN GRANT

Hawksley Workman
Almost A Full Moon
(Universal)

Hawksley Workman works best when he has something familiar to wax romantic over. In the case of Almost A Full Moon, it's Christmas. Recorded in two days last month in Paris, the mini-album is certainly not a typical holiday collection. It's not nearly hackneyed enough for that. Instead, Workman pours out a sincere handful of originals that celebrate things such as grandparents (Three Generations) and learning how to knit (Learn How To Knit). Somewhere in there the singer finds room for the kind of odd but somehow slice-of-life love songs that made his 1999 debut album For Him And The Girls great -- and all with nothing more than a piano and guitar/ bass/drums lineup. And when he sings, "Bring your kisses and a couple of clementines to go with the wine," you can almost smell it. (More on: Hawksley Workman).
