Yeah Yeah Yeahs
Show Your Bones
(Interscope/Universal)
Not so many decades ago, music lovers routinely had heated arguments over the identity of the "Greatest Rock 'n' Roll Band in the World."
Today, we have more important things to worry about (like speculating over the identity of the next American Idol castoff).
Besides we know that the greatest rock 'n' roll band in the world is The Rolling Stones (for those over 45), U2 (for those under) or someone you've probably never even heard of (for the indie-rock crowd).
Well, with the release of Show Your Bones, Yeah Yeah Yeahs make a fine case for reviving that long-dormant argument.
For, today, New York's divine Yeah Yeah Yeahs are the greatest rock 'n' roll band in the world. And by today, I mean March 31, 2006. It could well change tomorrow.
But with the release of an album that qualifies as the year's best punk/neo-grunge/alt.country/nu-metal/art-rock/power-pop/dance album to date, YYYs rule.
Minimalist noise from a trio fronted by a Siouxsie Sioux-esque singer; insistent, pounding rhythms for a post-drum machine generation; three chords and some truth. Show Your Bones has it all.
And it's all presented with a barely contained tension that invariably sends even the gentlest of ballads off into cacophonous glory long before there's any danger of things getting too sentimental.
What more could a rock 'n' roll fan of any age ask for?
