TORONTO - The entranced audience sang the exact same words too - loudly and clearly.
It was an oddly touching moment as the group performed a more soulful and slowed down version of the ballad, Maps, from their 2003 debut, Fever To Tell, about half-way into their hour-and-25-minute set, even though the trio's striking frontwoman thought it came too early in the show.
"Is it time for a Yeah Yeah Yeahs' love song?" she asked. "It seems so soon. I've always loved Toronto. We'd like to dedicate this song to all the lovers in Toronto," before adding: "Yeah Yeah Yeah - love!"
Karen O (her last name is actually Orzolek) also dedicated the song to Amanda Blank, whose buzzed about debut disc, I Love You, came out on Tuesday.
"We were here two years ago and that's two f---ing years too long," summed up the singer of the obvious love affair happening between Toronto and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs.
Truer words were never spoken.
The trio, rounded out by cool-looking-and-sounding guitarist Nick Zinner and drummer Brian Chase, have become increasingly better known with the release of each subsequent album - 2006's Show Your Bones and this year's It's Blitz!, the latter featuring such singles as Heads Will Roll and Zero, which went over extremely well with Tuesday night's crowd.
Performing on a stage that was dominated by a black and blue circular backdrop, the group - joined on the road by a touring guitarist-keyboardist - opened the show with the new song Runaway with Karen O decked out in a black scarf and a white kimono.
It seemed there was nothing too dramatic or theatrical for this performance-loving gal, who eventually stripped down to reveal her trademark black bowl haircut and an outfit consisting of a glow-in-the-dark psychedelic shirt, yellow and brown patterned leggings, a red plastic skirt and custom-made runners.
And just in case, you had any trouble seeing Karen O, there were two spotlight guys directly on either side of the stage.
She's a big fan of stretching out her long, gangly arms with a microphone cord wrapped around them or just jumping up and down or spinning to emphasize a note.
Song highlights ranged from the animated Dull Life and Soft Shade, both from It's Blitz!, the Fever To Tell songs Rich and Y-Control and Show Your Bones tunes, Gold Lion, which saw Karen O put on a long, gold, flowing choker, which she showed off as she danced around the stage, and Honey Bear.
Actually, she liked to take off and put back on her clothes as the evening progressed. At one point the red plastic skirt came off and then was returned to her shoulders like a mini-cape or poncho.
And a shower of blue and white confetti also rained down on the stage during the slower and moodier Skeletons and the set-ending Zero, both from It's Blitz!
