Ying Yang Twins
Chemically Imbalanced
(TVT/Universal)
Once upon a time, Ying Yang Twins planned to title this album 2 Live Crew. So it's no surprise Atlanta rappers D-Roc and Kaine are as nasty as they want to be on their fifth CD Chemically Imbalanced. But they aren't as nasty as they used to be, either. Granted, it would be tough for the Twins (and producer Mr. ColliPark) to be sleazier than they were on last year's irresistibly filthy Wait (The Whisper Song). Still, at first this hour-long disc seems to be cut from the same cloth.
The 18-track set kicks off with old-school me-so-horny bangers like 1st Booty on Duty, Jiggling and Jack it Up, with the duo urging you to "shake that thing like a tambourine, move it 'round and 'round like a washing machine" (one of the few couplets we can quote in its entirety).
But like their last album United State of Atlanta, Chemically Imbalanced also aims above the crotch. The relationship tune Take it Slow is relatively romantic (especially for these guys). But the biggest departure comes on the disc's second half, when Wyclef Jean joins the party for a handful of more inspired and adventurous tunes.
Dangerous creatively stitches bits of Maneater and Black Betty into a midtempo funk-rocker. Friday is an ode to nightclubbing -- but it also includes a designated driver PSA. And the quirky Family works an OutKast vibe with its oddball harmonies and offbalance clatter.
All told, it's far from their raunchiest work. But the yin-yang approach leads to the Twins' most varied and mature disc.
You'll love it long time.
