Album Review: Dwight Yoakam

TOMORROW'S SOUNDS TODAY
By ANIKA VAN WYK

TOMORROW'S SOUNDS TODAY
Dwight Yoakam
(WEA/WARNER BROTHERS)

Dwight Yoakam delivers a traditionally inspired, yet very funky album. The tight-jeaned Yoakam takes inspiration from the likes of Buddy Holly, Hank Williams Sr. and Buck Owens, who sings and co-writes on this CD with Yoakam. What Do You Know About Love and For Love's Sake are both strong songs, but it's Free To Go that really stands out. "Love only pauses for a while and is always free to go," he sings. However, the coolest song is his very country remake of the Cheap Trick hit I Want You To Want Me. Also, don't overlook the inside CD cover art -- it's Yoakam, who wrote all but a couple of tracks, relaxing in a pink top with two women wearing body paint that make them look like speakers flanking a TV showing the image of a turntable.
