Album Review: Young, Neil

ROAD ROCK VOL. 1
By JANE STEVENSON

ROAD ROCK VOL. 1
Neil Young
(Reprise-Warner)

Anyone who witnessed the folksy, family, friendly outing that was Neil Young at the Molson Amphitheatre this past August will be thrilled to hear his latest recording, in stores Tuesday.

The Toronto-born singer-songwriter, accompanied by a tight six-piece band including wife Pegi and sister Astrid on backing vocals, decided to record his Music In Head tour.

And much like that road trip, there aren't many major hits on this eight-song recording, other than a spirited take of Walk On, and an inspired cover of Bob Dylan's All Along The Watchtower, featuring opening act Chrissie Hynde trading verses with Neil.

Young also avoids material from his excellent solo album, Silver & Gold, released earlier this year.

Instead, we get older gems in all their extended glory like the raging, 18-minute version of Cowgirl In The Sand and the 11-minute, slow-building take on Words -- both crowd-pleasers in T.O.

Less effective is the 10-minute rendition of the meandering Tonight's The Night .

Another highlight is the pretty, stripped-down take on Peace Of Mind .

Now that Young has already whipped out a live solo collection, here's hoping the long-awaited release from the Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young reunion, also staged this year, is coming soon.
