Album Review: Young, Neil

LIVE AT MASSEY HALL 1971
Making up for lost time

Neil Young
Live at Massey Hall 1971
(Reprise/Warner)

Regular people lose keys, wallets, cellphones. Neil Young loses entire albums.

Case in point: The CD/DVD combo Live at Massey Hall 1971. Recorded and filmed in Toronto during a solo homecoming tour as Young's star was on the rise, this set of then-new material was supposed to follow After the Gold Rush -- only to fall by the wayside after the restless and mercurial musician recut many of the tunes at impromptu Nashville sessions that would reap the legendary album Harvest.

Some 35 years later, as the second release in his new Archives Performance Series, Young has finally coughed up an official version of this much-heralded show -- and fans won't be disappointed. Switching between acoustic guitar and grand piano, the 25-year-old budding folk icon delivers intimate, confessional versions of future classics like Heart of Gold, Needle and the Damage Done, Old Man, A Man Needs a Maid and Journey Through the Past, along with previously released fare like Cowgirl in the Sand, Down by the River and the topical Ohio, plus true rarities like Dance Dance Dance and Bad Fog of Loneliness. While time has obviously lessened the impact of the familiar material, the crystal-clean CD audio is several steps up from the bootlegs that have been circulating for decades.

The DVD footage is also impressive, albeit slightly inconsistent -- sometimes the image doesn't quite match up with the audio (there were two shows recorded in Toronto), and some gaps in the video are plugged with shots of a tape recorder onstage.

What is unmitigatedly impressive, though, is the exhaustive slate of DVD extras: Two performances from a 1971 Johnny Cash TV special; tons of footage of Neil at his Broken Arrow Ranch, taken from an early '70s Dutch TV documentary; radio interviews; scenes of Young rooting around in his massive archive in the '90s; newspaper reviews of the concert; a biography; a selected discography; a photo gallery (with optional captions); a timeline; and even pictures of Young's original handwritten lyrics and the old tape boxes.

Talk about making up for lost time.
