Alfie Zappacosta's last gig was divine
By KERRY DIOTTE

Alfie Zappacosta is just back from Halifax, N.S., where he had a second chance to play Jesus Christ on stage.

It's been eight long years since the Edmonton singer/songwriter/actor played the lead role in Jesus Christ Superstar when it was here at the Mayfield Dinner Theatre.

So he jumped at the chance to play Christ when offered the gig at Halifax's Neptune Theatre. He wound up acting on the same stage with the likes of Heather Rankin - a member of the famous musical family - who starred as Mary Magdalene.

"Yes, it's really something playing Jesus," grins Alfie, still sporting the beard and long hair of the charismatic character. "I promise, though, I don't let it go to my head."

The trip to the coast also afforded Alfie the opportunity to see just how hot that part of the country is for movies these days.

Harrison Ford, Mariah Carey and Liam Neeson were all in and around Halifax working on projects.

Alfie even managed to have a drink or two with Liam.

"Heather and I were sitting around at this pub and saw him there," recalls Alfie. "We didn't want to bug him but he kind of joined our conversation.

"He's a great big, hulking man - quiet and gentle, though."

By contrast, Alfie says, Harrison Ford - who often plays big, powerful, heroic characters in the movies - looks no bigger than five-foot-eight or so.

As for future projects, Alfie's kicking around the notion of doing some musical gigs on the East Coast with Heather - and he's likely getting more acting, this time on the silver screen.

He's tentatively set to play an Italian movie producer for a film to be shot in Toronto.

So you'll see Alfie around Edmonton, sticking with his beard and long hair since he'll need both for the movie role.

Geez, there are a lot of good things happening for this guy career-wise lately - seems almost like he walks on water!
