CALGARY - This guy's weird. But, despite that (and yes, video footage of anime pornography, Charles Manson and old horror movies at a rock show qualifies him as weird), Rob Zombie knows how to put on a show.
Zombie, currently on a North American tour supporting his new album, Educated Horses, rolled into town last night to bring his unique brand of dread-rock to the masses, with opening act Anthrax, at the Corral Centre.
With the theme music from Halloween blaring (Zombie is set to direct the next Halloween movie), Zombie and crew made it clear as they took the stage in front of a less-than-half full Corral Centre, this would not be your average rock concert.
If nothing else, Zombie's show harkened back to the days when metal was fun (think Iron Maiden.)
Wearing skull masks and skeleton-emblazoned clothing, the band, featuring former Marilyn Manson guitarist John 5, longtime bassist Blasko and drummer Tommy Clufetos, smashed their way through the opening number, American Witch, with a renewed sense of purpose.
From Living Dead Girl to White Zombie's More Human than Human, Zombie entertained like a pro.
Sounding raspy and strained while speaking (they only have three shows left on this tour), Zombie managed to mask his sore throat while singing.
And when he couldn't, he made up for it with enthusiasm.
Guitarist John 5 was worth the price of admission alone, with his simply awe-inspiring mastering of his instrument -- he plays Hendrix's Star Spangled Banner with his teeth.
Zombie marked his return to Calgary and did it with style and spit-filled, sweat-stained grace.
Anthrax, which turned 25 this year, showed up to fill the 'Oh, yeah, those guys' part of the show.
And they did it with a mullet-flowing, too-tight-black-jeans-wearing, horns-in-the-air style.
But who cares what you look like when you're having that much fun?
