Air Canada Centre - July 17, 2012
By Jane Stevenson, QMI Agency

It shouldn’t come as a huge surprise that when two of the biggest Latin pop stars in the world decide to co-headline tour they can do whatever they want.

So after Jennifer Lopez opened for Enrique Iglesias at their Montreal tour launch on Saturday night, he opened for her at the Air Canada Centre on Tuesday night in front of more than 13,000 fans during the first of two back-to-back shows.

In theory, it probably sounded like a better idea given the sheer splash factor of J.Lo’s highly theatrical production, with plenty of costume changes, dancers, an eight piece band, staircases, fireworks, steam bursts, and props like a boxing ring.

Oh yeah, and her 25-year-old boyfriend Caspar Smart, who danced solo with his 42-year-old lady during the last song Dance Again, at the front of an enormous catwalk.

Still, Iglesias, 37, proved to be the more personable of the two performers dressed casually in his baseball hat, t-shirt, jeans and boots and reaching out to the audience early and often.

Oh, and he did have white confetti and balloons too.

Opening and closing his hour-and-15 minute set with Tonight (I’m Lovin’ You), Iglesias first came to the edge of his large stage so fans could gather at his feet during Bailamos.

Iglesias, backed by a seven piece band, certainly seemed comfortable here given it was his third time in Toronto on the same record so he was nonplussed whether it was panties or a can of beer being thrown up to him.

And when he gathered five of his band members in a semi-circle at the front of the stage for a short acoustic set, beginning with Ring My Bells, by the time he’d wrapped up with a cover of Stand By Me, he had also invited up a male couple to join him too, pouring shots of rum for them and gamely getting his picture taken.

The second male up on stage actually swept Iglesias up in his arms after Iglesias jumped up on him and put his legs around his waist to huge cheers.

But nothing could match the first encore song as Iglesias re-appeared on a smaller b-stage at the back of the floor to sing Hero and invited a female fan up on stage to slow dance with her while he sang it directly to her.

“Are you married?” he asked afterwards.

“I have a hall pass,” she said.

“Does everyone here have a hall pass?” he responded and the crowd went nuts all over again. As for Lopez, she proved once and for all she’s no longer Jenny From the Block.

She opened her show with male dancers in grey tails and top hats and female dancers in white feathers anticipating her arrival as she appeared in a sparkly nude body suit and sparkly shoes (there was white fur hat and skirt too but she quickly got rid of those to shake her formidable booty.) Get Right, Love Don’t Cost A Thing, I’m Into You and Waiting For Tonight followed, the latter which showed her bathed in smoke, with wind in her hair as she dramatically posed waiting for the song to start at the front of the catwalk.

It was hard not to laugh out loud when she followed that then with the statement: “I’m just a simple girl from New York City.”

At this point, J.Lo had changed into sparkly gold and silver tracksuit and baseball hat for a hip hop medley that included I’m Real and the now ironic Jenny From The Block.

Another costume change into a sparkly blue mini dress with fringe saw Lopez shake it well enough during Hold It Don’t Drop It, but then there was a ridiculous section where she was pampered with water and a towel rubdown from two male helpers before putting on a blue floor length coverup to sing her first hit song, If You Had My Love, and a syrupy tribute to her four-year old twins (with ex Marc Anthony) - Until It Beats No More.

Much more fun was the Spanish section where La Lopez was decked out in a hat and suit for Let’s Get Loud before another on stage costume change into a barely there black and nude body suit for the two highlights of the night, Papi and On The Floor, during which her male dancers went topless a la Magic Mike.
