Alanis enlists fans for setlist
By -- For JAM! Music

Alanis Morissette plans to let fans have their say on her upcoming North American tour, which kicks off in Toronto tomorrow (June 7) at Hummingbird Centre For Performing Arts.

The Canadian singer is marking the 10th anniversary of her international breakthrough, "Jagged Little Pill," with her first ever acoustic tour and acoustic version of the album, simply titled "Jagged Little Pill Acoustic," due out July 26 on Maverick/Warner. Starbucks will sell the album exclusively for six weeks, starting on June 13.

"For the acoustic tour, I want as best as I can to increase the interactivity that I have on my website," says Morissette of www.alanismorissette.com. "It remains to be seen; it's not even that easy itself, but what I love about acoustic shows is I'm actually able to have a dialogue of sorts. I'll figure out if that can be done. So that's the tour. I'll invite people on the web site to make requests, so they'll request certain songs from the last 10 years that we'll put into the set based on their submissions."

Morissette once again teamed with "Jagged Little Pill" producer Glen Ballard for the acoustic album for which they employ various instruments including the exotic perapaloshka, marzophone, cajon, and maraca.

After releasing two dance/pop albums in Canada only, the then teenage singer-songwriter literally wrote with dozens of songwriters, even cutting country songs, before ending up in Los Angeles in 1994 and clicking with Ballard. "Jagged Little Pill" sold more than 30 million albums and made the former child actor and singer (she released her first single at age 10) a worldwide sensation.

The media unfairly pigeonholed the spunky, funny and forthright 21-year-old as an "angry young woman," based solely on her aggressive lyrical catharthis "You Oughta Know" and "Right Through You," verses the more even-tempered explorations like "Perfect" and "You Learn" and her in-person warmth.

After retreating to India for some time off and self-discovery, she returned to America to work again with Ballard on 1998's "Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie," co-producing it with him.

Of rerecording "Jagged Little Pill" material acoustically, she says, "Thankfully, there was a timelessness to those songs that I didn't cringe my way through reinterpreting them. I would have walked away if that had been the case. What I'm finding is that some of the questions I was posing at that time, I've just really taken those questions 10 years further in my own evolution as a human being. So those questions are still there; they've just been deepened, I think."

Morissette's last studio album, "So-Called Chaos," was released in May of 2004 and she is due for a follow-up. "I have about 17 songs worth ready to go," Morissette says. "I don't know when I'll do it. Likely over the next year."

Asked if she may work again with her long-time friend, Canadian singer/songwriter/producer Tim Thorney (currently working with ex I Mother Earth frontman Brian Byrne), with whom she was hanging out at her induction into Canada's Walk Of Fame yesterday, and she says, "I don't know. I think with Tim, I'll be working on and off with him until I'm dead."
