Toronto's heavy metal band Anvil was formed in 1978 by Steve "Lips" Kudlow, Robb Reiner, Dave Allison, and Ian Dickson. They were known as Lips. They gigged predominantly around Toronto and released an independent album in 1981 called "Hard N' Heavy". Attic Records took notice and signed them, re-releasing Hard N' Heavy and dubbing it their "debut" album. The band toured constantly all over the world, opening in Canada for the likes of Iron Maiden, and released two more original studio albums for Attic, Metal On Metal (1982, the title track of which became Anvil's signature song) and Forged In Fire (1983). Attic dropped them in 1984 but released Backwaxed, a pseudo best-of, in 1985 that featured five "best of" tracks and five previously unreleased songs recorded at sessions for the three previous albums over the years.
The band was in record deal limbo for a few years, and then Metal Blade in the US came calling and signed them. Two studio albums followed - Strength Of Steel (1987) and Pound For Pound (1988) - and in 1989 they released a live album, Past And Present, that for most fans captured what Anvil was really all about: playing live. Shortly after the release of this album, the band experienced their first line-up change since their formation in 1978: Allison left the band and was replaced by the only American to join the band, Sebastian Marino.
Once again the band was without a deal but eventually Helix's manager William Seip and his label Maximum Records signed Anvil and released one album, 1991's 'Worth The Weight'. Anvil went another four years without a deal, this time getting signed to Tom Treumuth's Hypnotic Records in Canada; their first studio album since 1991 was 1996's 'Plugged In Permanent', and was followed quickly in 1997 with 'Absolutely No Alternative'.
In 2009, a documentary -
Anvil! The Story of Anvil - chronicling the career of Anvil became a hot film festival 'must see' and re-ignited Anvil's career.
