Born: 1972 in Montreal, Quebec
Singer/songwriter Adam Cohen is the son of legendary Canadian poet Leonard Cohen. His father and mother Suzanne (Elrod -- but is not the Suzanne of Leonard Cohen's famous song) split up when Adam was five years old, so he spent the next several years living in New York and Europe with his mother. Later he would find himself shuttling between his father's and mother's homes in Montreal, Paris, London, Greece, France and the US.
Cohen started playing music by age 12, and grew serious enough to call himself a musician by age 15 and spent the requisite amount of time slogging it out in classic rock and experimental original acts.
His influences were vast and various from Steely Dan to Stevie Wonder to Randy Newman to Sting. And with a consistent plethora of poets and musicians and artists in his life, he decided that music was a worthy outlet for his creative pursuits.
Cohen was signed to his father's label, Sony, in 1996, on the strength of his accessible pop melodies as a songwriter, singer, guitarist and keyboard player. His self-titled debut, produced in Los Angeles (where Cohen lives) by Steve Lindsey, was released in the Spring of 1998 and featured songs co-written with the likes of Tonio K., Phil Roy and Brock Walsh. A litany of guest musicians also graced the album but not his famous father, Leonard.
Cohen began his first live tour of his material in July 1998.
