Early in 1992, Tom Ferris (formerly of Moev) put an ad in a Seattle newspaper looking for a singer who could perform over a bed of electronic music. Singer Trevor Hurst answered the ad and the beginnings of Vancouver's Econoline Crush were born. A couple of months later they played their first dates in Vancouver and eventually went through their share of member changes. Finally the line-up solidified at Hurst, Gregg Leask, Robbie Morfitt, Daniel Yaremko, and Hack.

The band toured across the country and in 1993 the buzz across Canada regarding Econoline Crush was building so the band decided that, rather than wait for a major record label to come to them, they would record independently. The result was the six song EP Purge. The reception to this EP was so strong that they received a Juno nomination for it, and tours across the country were sold out with strong critical acceptance.

During the recording of the EP the band secured a recording deal with EMI Music Canada, and in 1994 returned to the studio to record their first full-length album, Affliction (released in 1995). Receiving positive critical and public response, Econoline Crush toured across the country once again to rave reviews from across the board.

Over the next couple of years, there were many many changes in the band. The lineup changed yet again, this time evening out with Hurst and Morfitt, Ziggy, Bob Wagner, and Ken Fleming. Their second album, The Devil You Know, was released in 1997 to mixed reviews although the band still received positive reviews for their live show.
