Born: Debbie Foisy
Toronto-born native Canadian Debbie Foisy learned to play guitar at age 11. She made her professional debut in 1974 at a benefit for the Women's Press Gang who the song "Who Loves".
She established her own record label, Lucy Records, and released her Tom Lavin (Powder Blues) eponymous debut in 1977. Her second release was showcase of tunes she'd penned prior to her first release called 'Ferron Backed Up'.
It was 1980's 'Testimony' that gave the folk guitarist some credible headway in feminist and Women's circles who used the title track as a battle cry.
Following 1984's 'Shadow On A Dime' she toured extensively falling into the role of singer/songwriter and self-promoter which sat uncomfortably with her. She took 6 years off to re-focus and re-evaluate her role as an artist outside the glamour and autographs.
1990's "Phantom Center" on Chameleon Records was produced by Joe Chiccarelli. Ferron dedicated a full year of touring 'electric' as Dylan had in the '60's for the first time with a four piece band behind her. Previously she'd only played smaller acoustic shows on her own.
