Manitoba-born Daniel Lavoie began his music career in Quebec in the early 1970's and released his first album in English, 'Nirvana Blue', in 1979 on the Apex label. With the dawn of the '80's he made a go of it as an independent, recording albums as money would allow.
With a fateful partnership writing songs with Daniel DeShaime in 1983 and the production of 'Tension, Attention' with British producer John Eden (David Bowie). Lavoie began achieving success in Quebec and in Europe particularly with the singles "Hotel des reves" and "Ils s'aiment" forcing him to shuttle frequently between Montreal and Paris.
While still on the independent Trafic label Lavoie released 'Vue Sur La Mer' in 1986 featuring the musical help of Kevin Jarvis (keys), Robert Stanley (guitar), Luc Boivin (drums) and vocalists Gaston Mandeville, Gaston Dussault, Sylvain Lelievre, and Thierry Seychan. The album did so well that an English version was released on Capitol Records in early 1987.
However, by late 1987, Lavoie had already jumped over to WEA.
