Metalwood is a boundary breaking jazz combo featuring Ontarian and current New York resident Froman, Torontonian Murley (Shuffle Demons, Mike Murley And The Sailors, Time Warp), and Vancouverites Turner and Tarry. The players often have to fly to each others' home towns just to rehearse, let alone record or perform.
The act has been steadily trying to revive the ambition and drive of fusion acts such as Brand X and Miles Davis. Their self-titled debut album netted them a 1998 JUNO Award for Best Contemporary Jazz Album.
They would repeat that success with their sophomore effort, 'Metalwood 2', landing them their second consecutive Juno Award.
The band has managed an album a year including 1999's 'Live' which features their eclectic and electric brand of jazz.
Brad Turner and Chris Tarry both teach at Capilano College in the Jazz studies program. Turner has his own side project, The Brad Turner Quartet as does Tarry with The Chris Tarry Group. There are also spin-off projects like Junction all of which fall under the duo's Maximum Jazz record label.
