The story of Sloan begins in Halifax, Nova Scotia, where their brand of 'indie' rock established them as one of the top grunge bands on the East Coast music scene in 1991.

Chris Murphy, a former member of Blackpool, is the principal songwriter of the group. He and guitarist Jay Ferguson previously played together in the band Kennedy Lake Rd. Managed by Pete Rowan, who had his own record company, DTK Records, Sloan recorded the hit single Underwhelmed for the Halifax compilation album Hear And Now. It later was the first single from their debut album Smeared on DGC/Geffen which was released in October 1992.

By their own admission, the band had reached a low point by the end of 1994, after touring for Twice Removed. Relations in the band had soured, and Sloan was unhappy with Geffen Records. The band bounced back after a rumoured breakup, however, with 1996's One Chord To Another. The band released the record on their own Murderecords label in Canada and gave Geffen the chance to release it in the U.S. (1997), where it included a bonus "party" album consisting largely of goofy cover versions.

The next two years yielded a studio follow-up, "Navy Blues", and the band's first live album, "Four Nights At The Palais Royale", recorded in Toronto.

In September 1999, they released "Between The Bridges", a 12-song collection featuring three tracks written by each band member.
