McCarroll dishes on the designer dirt
By -- Calgary Sun

Heidi Klum is surrounded by designer wannabes from the television show Project Runway, including finalist Jay McCarroll, top left in hat.

There are three designers left on Project Runway, but Jay McCarroll says it's a two-way race.

"We all had a shot at winning -- all of us except for Wendy that is," laughs the finalist.

Despite the fact Project Runway's queen or king of couture was crowned more than four months ago, Canadian fans (or at least those who haven't snuck a peek on-line) will finally know today if McCarroll, Kara Saun or Wendy Pepper was named the next big U.S. designer.

On tonight's finale, the three remaining designers will compete in their last project -- creating and showing a collection at Olympus Fashion Week in New York, where a winner will be named.

McCarroll, 29, who runs a used clothing shop in Pennsylvania, already knows the outcome, but the outspoken and kooky finalist agreed to take a trip back in time for the pleasure of his Canadian admirers.

"I thought I had a 50/50 shot -- 50 for me and 50 for Kara. Obviously, Wendy had no shot," he says.

"Kara was perfect the whole way through -- her stuff was very now. Wendy was lucky, so you never knew what she was going to pull out of her ass."

Throughout the show's run, Pepper, a 40-year-old mother and tailor from Virginia, was criticized for designing "dowdy" clothes. However, when push came to shove, she always managed to avoid elimination and squeaked into the final three.

Los Angeles costume designer Saun, on the other hand, was consistent in designing beautiful outfits and impressing the judges.

"I swear that girl has extra hours in her day," says McCarroll. "Everything she did was amazing."

As for McCarroll, he doesn't believe his real talent came through on the show. In fact, he says he was surprised every time the judges complimented any of his designs.

"I didn't really like any of them because I could never really do the kind of work I wanted to do.

"The show was filmed in three weeks so there was never enough time or money.

"I liked the future challenge, but my outfit sucked ... and the Chrysler building dress -- people really loved that one -- but that's not me."

So what is McCarroll? He says viewers will finally get a look at his true style during the show's final episode.

"We were given five months to do it and they actually gave us some (expletive) money to spend. I think my stuff turned out great. I definitely thought I had a shot at winning."

The two-hour season finale of Project Runway airs throughout the day on the Life Network at 7 a.m., 11 a.m., 6 p.m. and 9 p.m.
