TORONTO (CP) - Daily Show correspondent Rob Corddry snagged the plum assignment of the plight of Corn Cob Bob, the mascot for an ethanol industry group who was ousted from Canada Day celebrations in Ottawa this year. While the resident Canadian correspondent on the late-night comedy show, Samantha Bee, might have been the obvious choice for the news hit, Corddry got the job.
"Sam said, 'Now that I have my green card I'm never going back to that frigid hell hole. .. Send the bald guy,' " he said Friday. "It was something like that ... I'm paraphrasing."
While Corddry didn't come to Toronto to blow the lid off the Corn Cob Bob controversy, he did want to get to a deeper truth. While some believe the mascot - used to promote ethanol made from corn for the Canadian Renewable Fuels Association - was shucked out of the Canada Day celebration at the request of event sponsor Shell, Corddry feels the real story is one of discrimination.
"Those of us who are three-quarters human being and one-quarter corn maybe aren't treated as fairly as those who are, say, seven-ninths human."
"Corn Cob Bob is a ... special character who has been perhaps mistreated by our modern society, and he is just trying to get what anyone else born like him should get, and that is fair treatment, a good job and maybe a ramp leading into a building."
This was Corddry's second trip to Toronto. His first trip was marred by a long delay at Canadian Customs.
"We're liars. We can't help lying. We can't help saying 'My name is Bill Gates,' " he said. "Crap comes out of my mouth that you would not believe when faced with the Canadian border patrol."
Having performed until midnight at an improv show in New York's Central Park, Corddry was coasting on less than four hours sleep before boarding a flight to Toronto Friday morning. Perhaps too tired to lie, his dealings with Canadian Customs went smoothly this time around.
"I guess there's a lesson to be learned here, but I have no idea what it is."
Even though this visit was less than 24 hours he shared some of his thoughts about American tourists in Canada.
"Well there's always the language barrier - which I struggle with."
"The only thing I'm going to take away from Canada this time is probably some bacon and a hangover 'cause you are the people with the bacon, right?"
In addition to his news items on the Daily Show, Corddry has a part in an upcoming movie Failure to Launch, starring Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew McConaughey. "My role is ultimately cuttable," he said.
