Former NFL quarterback Gary Hogeboom didn't win Survivor: Guatemala, but his last minute play certainly changed the game.
Just before he was voted off the CBS show, Hogeboom exposed cocky Judd Sergeant as a liar, a move that likely resulted in Sergeant's elimination Thursday.
While Hogeboom -- who competed as Gary Hawkins to conceal his identity -- knew for nearly a week that Sergeant lied to his alliance about where a special immunity idol was hidden, he waited until the last minute to rat him out.
"I wanted to be in an alliance with Judd. I knew I had to work with somebody, so I went up to Judd and said, 'Hey I'm not going to tell everybody that you lied. Maybe we could work something out later in the game,' " says Hogeboom.
"Obviously that didn't work. Then, on my last episode, he was talking trash, so I decided to stir it up a little."
And that he did.
On this week's Survivor, Sergeant's strongest ally, Stephenie LaGrossa, joined the rest of the group and voted him out.
This came as a huge shock to viewers, and to Sergeant, who believed the pair were not only tight, but running the game.
Hogeboom says that was never the case.
"Judd definitely was the reason they were strong -- he was the reason they won the ball challenge -- but, I got the impression that it was Steph and Rafe (Judkins) who were running the game," he says, stopping short of suggesting they will be the final two.
"Steph is definitely a great player. She came in there playing hard and she wants it bad. But, she's kind of getting a little short-fused."
Despite not making it to the end, Hogeboom says if he could go back and do it all again, he wouldn't change a thing -- especially lying about his name and his past.
"I wanted people to judge me on how I played the game, not by what I did in the past," he says.
Survivor airs on Global and CBS Thursday at 9 p.m. followed by the three-hour finale Sunday, Dec. 11.
