CanWest TV unveils fall plans

Not only is the E! network coming to Canada, but Ryan Seacrest wants to bring his show here, too.

"I think we'll do our show (the nightly E! News) from here every once in a while," said Seacrest, who was in Toronto yesterday as CanWest held its fall launch for Global and E! -- the re-branded CH -- at Massey Hall. "I think we'll do it from Toronto every once in a while."

Seacrest, who is the lead anchor and managing editor of E! News, was joined at the CanWest gala by Adrian Pasdar and Masi Oka from Heroes, Canadian Sarah Carter from Shark and Balthazar Getty from Brothers & Sisters, among others.

"It certainly seems that in America we can't have enough (entertainment news)," Seacrest said. "I always have wanted to build the E! business in Canada and this is the right time to infiltrate, if you will."

Seacrest also has a radio show in Los Angeles, but Canadians know him best as the host of American Idol. Seacrest agreed whole-heartedly when it was suggested to him that if he and bullying judge Simon Cowell ever had an extended intellectual argument rather than just sniping at each other, Seacrest would be the favourite, not Cowell.

"I think you're right," Seacrest said with a wide grin. "That may be the most accurate statement you've ever made.

"(Cowell) and I literally could sit for hours and spar, as if it were a ping-pong match. We have a very similar sense of humour and a similar understanding for what each of us do in the entertainment world. And he loathes any success of mine and I loathe any success of his."

So, to translate, CanWest is hoping that Cowell loathes the addition of E! to the Canadian TV landscape.

Pasdar, who said his nickname is "Can-Adrian" because he has worked in Canada so many times, was asked if the success of Heroes has allowed him to compete on an even playing field with his wife, Natalie Maines of the Dixie Chicks. Maines and her cohorts won five Grammy Awards earlier this year.

"That would be mean-spirited," Pasdar protested. "Once we depart work, the only thing that concerns us is our children."

Oka wasn't satisfied with that answer.

"Maybe an Emmy nomination (for Pasdar) can balance the scales," Oka said.

Carter, who gets to work with James Woods every day on Shark , gave a funny response when asked if she could do anything about Woods' hair dye.

"I don't think that's my place," Carter said. "I think he knows what he's doing when it comes to his hair."

The evidence suggests otherwise, but hey, why judge?

When asked about working with Sally Field on Brothers & Sisters, Getty assured everyone that Burt Reynolds doesn't hang around the set every day.

"No, we haven't seen Burt," Getty said. "But Sally Field is just as you'd expect her to be, funny, warm and very maternal. She's the disciplinarian, because me and the boys kind of screw off a lot, and she puts us back in our place."

CanWest also announced yesterday that the Global national news with lead anchor Kevin Newman is moving from Vancouver to a new state-of-the-art studio in Ottawa.
