Tom Green back on the air
New show Tom Green's House Tonight is truth in advertising
By -- Sun Media

So Tom Green has a talk show.

Like, for real?

"It's not a parody," insisted the Canadian comedian, whose new syndicated and highly interactive project, titled Tom Green's House Tonight, officially moves from the Internet to television this evening on The Comedy Network.

"I'm not taking the piss out of talk shows, because I do love the format. It's not Fernwood 2 Night or something like that. It's real guests and we're having a real conversation. But that being said, funny is the goal."

The hour-long show, which will run on weeknights, is a beefed-up version of Tom Green Live, which Green has been doing on tomgreen.com over the past year-and-a-half. Tom Green's House Tonight will be available on both TV and the Internet.

"It actually is in my house, my real house, in my living room," said Green, who lives in the Los Angeles area. "And we're going to play up the fact that it's my real house. People will be arriving and ringing the doorbell live on camera."

So what kind of guests are we talking about, Tom?

"Some of the people who did the show last year on the Internet were people like Andy Dick, Steve-O from Jackass, Andrew Dice Clay, Norm Macdonald, Tom Bergeron, Dr. Drew, Mark Geragos is coming in January, Val Kilmer did the show, Brooke Shields did it, Bob Saget, Joe Rogan, Jeff Probst is coming, Gene Simmons did it, Perez Hilton is coming back. So that will be the tone of it. It definitely isn't, you know, serious people."

It's odd, even though Green is a 36-year-old man with a lot of showbiz contacts, in Canada we still think of him as a 23-year-old kid.

"I sort of do, too," Green said.

"Keep in mind, my old show (which ran on Rogers Cable, the Comedy Network and MTV in the 1990s) was a weekly half-hour show. Plus, it was a different time. It was the pre-gross-out era in comedy, and I was doing that stuff back in 1994. It was kind of like, 'Hey, what's the craziest thing we can get onto TV?' This show is a lot more mainstream, in a good way."

Green -- whose movie resume includes Freddy Got Fingered, who briefly was married to actress Drew Barrymore, and who is a survivor of testicular cancer -- stopped short of calling this a new stage of his career.

"I try not to think about (career stepping-stones) as much as I used to, because you can't control what people think of you," Green said. "I want to do a show that is fun and ridiculous, but do I take the craft of doing a show like this seriously? Yeah, probably as seriously as anybody.

"The thing I'm excited about at this stage of my career, as you put it, is that I actually own the show. Because it's an Internet-based show that I'm doing anyway, which now is being syndicated onto TV, I don't have the fear of, 'Oh, am I going to be allowed to keep doing this? Is the network going to kick me off? How are the ratings?'

"It's a new world of broadcasting and I'm trying to come up with a model."

BOOB TUBERY: The first episode of the heavily promoted new CBC series The Border, which airs tonight, left us a little bored-er, quite frankly. Some critics loved it, but after a gripping opening sequence, we found The Border to be a tad flat. Oh well, maybe things will pick up in the second episode next week, when Sofia Milos' character arrives ... In the second-season debut of Guinea Pig tonight on Discovery, Ryan Stock takes on the cold. He is plunged into ice water, belted into a sinking car and buried alive in the snow to see how his body responds. Not well, we assume ... Tom Green's House Tonight will lead into two returning favourites -- The Daily Show with Jon Stewart and The Colbert Report -- on The Comedy Network this evening. Both Stewart and Colbert will be without their striking writers.
