Wiig not fond of Palin role

PARK CITY, Utah -- Is Kristen Wiig terrified at the prospect of following up Tina Fey as Sarah Palin? You betcha!

Despite Fey floating her name as a potential successor, Wiig says she has zero desire to don the hair-bun and glasses of the gun-toting, plain talkin' Alaska governor.

"I could never do Sarah Palin after Tina Fey did. It would be so hard," Wiig tells Sun Media. "I think she was pretty perfect on that one and America knew it even before she did it. What was so cool was her leaving SNL to do this really successful show (30 Rock) and then coming back to do this one thing, which turned out to be the biggest thing ever. She's so good at it. I hope I never have to do it. Those are some shoes to fill."

Of course, the inauguration of President Barack Obama transforms not just the political but the comedic landscape in the U.S. -- particularly for Saturday Night Live, which thrived on 2008's presidential election.

"That was such a weird time," says SNL regular Bill Hader. "You knew a lot of people were watching, but it was also news. You'd put on CNN and they'd be asking, 'What are they going to say about this?' And then an hour later we're in a meeting going, 'What are we going to say about this?' "

And neither Wiig nor Hader -- both of them at Sundance to chat up the 1980s-set comedy Adventureland -- are quite sure how SNL can continue to tap into the zeitgeist in a post-Obama world.

"You can't do Barack, he's the best," Hader says. "You can't make fun of gold. We'll have to find stuff. You never know. When the (Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich) happened, I was like, 'Oh, sweet.'"

(Similarly the flub of Obama's swearing-in ceremony piqued his interest. "The justice got nervous? Maybe I'll do that," he muses.)

At the very least, the renewed interest in SNL has proven a boon for its cast members, all of whom seemingly have film projects in the works.

Wiig, who Hader describes as a "comedy ninja," has made a mark in recent years by stealing scenes in Walk Hard, Knocked Up and Ghost Town. She remains cautious though about carrying a movie on her own. "Hopefully one day when the time is right. I don't know if it will be a comedy or a drama, though."

Hader meanwhile is scripting a comedy for Greg Mottola, who directed both Superbad (in which Hader played Seth Rogen's partner) and Adventureland.

Shooting the latter -- set in an era before smart-phones and instant messaging -- brought back memories for the 35-year-old Wiig. "I remember coming home and seeing if there was a note from a boy. 'Did he call? Are you sure?' Now it's all different. The kids are all sexting each other."
