By their costumes, ye shall know them. That's what it says in the Bible about Hallowe'en.

What you choose to be on Hallowe'en speaks volumes about how you see yourself and how you wish others saw you, and that goes double for celebrities -- because they know they're likely to be seen and photographed.

Some famous people engage in wishful thinking in their Hallowe'en costumes, some go for humour and others are completely delusional. P Diddy dressed as Prince falls into that last category.

Above all, a Hallowe'en costume can say what you secretly want people to know about you, which is why is Miley Cyrus dressing up as Nicki Minaj was such an inspired choice. It's just kind of a big "F--- You!" in a blonde wig, don't you think? Miley Cyrus is never going to be mistaken for Hannah Montana again.

We're not sure what Ellen DeGeneres is telegraphing in her Sofia Vergara outfit, but it seems that Lady Gaga's sexy mermaid costume, if that's what it is, emphasizes her wish to be known as a mythical creature.

Kim Kardashian dressed as a mermaid, of course, gives rise to a dozen different questions -- she doesn't own a full-length mirror? for one. Well. That was certainly mean-spirited.

On the ego front, Slash takes top prize for going out trick or treating as himself.

"I'm tired of coming up with new ideas, so I just go as me," he explains. By 'me' he means rock hero guitarist, not 'real me' -- nerdy little bike-riding Saul Hudson. Just so we're clear.

Says Slash, "It's usually really funny because I'll go to a Halloween party and run into two or three other people who are dressed as me."

That is really funny! But only if you're Slash.

In other cases where a costume choice speaks volumes about self-image, Alice Cooper says he dresses as an insurance salesman for Hallowe'en. Likewise, Gwen Stefani was dressed as goody-goody Sandy from Grease ( only, kind of zombie style) and Jessica Simpson dressed for Hallowe'en as Ye Olden Days Giant Cleavage. Donald Trump was a jackass on Hallowe'en, just like every other day. Common costumes included superheroes and comic book macho men for the guys and pointless, garters-n-cleavage tart costumes for the women; is there some kind of sexual crisis going on among the famous?

Finally there's Chris Brown, who posed with his posse dressed as a pack of middle-eastern terrorists. The boys wore robes, headgear, beards and bullets. You could assume this is more of the same from these guys with regard to misogyny, violence, guns and simple bad taste. You could. We just hope the costume choice doesn't mean Brown sees himself as a martyr. Surrounded by virgins. Trick or treat, we must say.
