Judging reality shows worth it?

When you're a well-known person in the music industry and you agree to be a judge on a reality TV show, you give up something to get something.
You get increased exposure, yes. But you give up your "cool factor," if that's important to your career.
Increasingly these days you see reality judges stay for a year or two and then bolt, since what's left of the music industry tends to treat them as a blight on society.
But is it worth it overall? Is it a worthy boost to a career, or a waste of time?
