Action man Vin Diesel is bringing legendary TV detective Kojak to the big screen in a new film adaptation, according to reports.

Late actor Telly Savalas portrayed the beloved New York cop on the hit 1970s series and in a number of TV movies that followed, and now The Fast and The Furious star has been tapped to take over the iconic role.

According to movie website, Skyfall writers Neal Purvis and Robert Wade will help to pen the script, while Diesel will produce the project with his One Race Films partner Samantha Vincent for Universal Pictures.

The planned movie will be the latest attempt at a Kojak revival - actor Ving Rhames played the title character in a failed TV revamp in 2005, but the show was scrapped after just one season.
