My first thought when watching the new series Deception was, "This is NBC's Revenge."
That's Revenge, the show -- not revenge, the concept.
Deception is a new drama that debuts Monday on NBC and Global. Revenge, of course, is the sophomore series that is airing Sundays on ABC and Citytv.
Deception and Revenge are not carbon copies. But they are similar in their portrayals of the ultra-rich doing nasty things. If you're old enough to appreciate a 1980s reference, maybe Deception is to Revenge what Dynasty was to Dallas, you know? Making TV shows about the really wealthy is a long-standing device that frees the characters from worrying about inconveniences such as buying food or cleaning up. They have "people" for that.
That's not to say television's rich people never worry about money. If TV has taught me anything, it's that if you have a lot of money, you want more. And you're also terrified of losing what you already have.
