Television audiences have an insatiable appetite for cooking shows, but since we also love to see ordinary folk engage in cutthroat competition and be humiliated by people more experienced than them, cooking reality shows are becoming their own distinct TV flavour.

The Taste, debuting Tuesday on ABC, looks kind of like The Voice for chefs, as hopefuls from all walks of culinary life cook for, and are judged by, a panel of experts. Food will be prepared, blind tastings will be had, teams will be formed and dreams will be crushed as contestants are kicked off one by one.

The panel of four judges includes No Reservations' Anthony Bourdain, Nigella Bites' Nigella Lawson, famed French chef Ludo Lefebvre and chef/restaurateur (and Top Chef: Miami contestant) Brian Malarkey.
