Keri Russell paints the town red
By Bill Harris, QMI Agency

Being cast in a TV series set in 1981 is all in the genes.

Whoops, wrong spelling. Not genes. Jeans.

"I think putting a gun in her waist-belt makes it incredibly difficult for Keri (Russell), because it's about there (pointing to chest level)," says Matthew Rhys, Russell's co-star in The Americans.

"High-waisted jeans," adds Russell, shaking her head. "So cruel."

Banter between Russell and Rhys notwithstanding, there isn't much light-heartedness in The Americans, which debuts Wednesday on FX and FX Canada. It's a serious drama set in the early 1980s, during the height of the Cold War between the U.S. and the Soviet Union.

Russell and Rhys play Elizabeth and Philip Jennings, a seemingly normal couple with two kids living in suburban Washington, D.C. What no one knows -- not even their children -- is that Elizabeth and Philip are not Americans, but rather Soviet spies who have been living in the U.S. for more than 25 years.
