KIDMAN

Dunham, McCarthy scrutiny is ugly
By Jim Slotek, QMI Agency

Dunham and body image

Scout Artie: "Yeah, there's some work to be done, I'll admit that."

Matt Keough: "And an ugly girlfriend."

Scout Barry: "What does that mean?"

Matt Keough: "Ugly girlfriend means no confidence."

Scout Pote: "He passes the eye-candy test. He's got the looks, he's great at playing the part. He just needs to get some playing time."

Matt Keough: "I'm just saying his girlfriend is a six at best." - Moneyball

You could draw a straight line between that tellingly-hilarious exchange from Moneyball, and the pre-Oscar storm that arose from TV's Girls, when the "unattractive" Hannah (Lena Dunham) seduced the "hotter" Josh (Patrick Wilson).

You know a show has cultural cachet when writers from Esquire, Entertainment Weekly and Slate are inspired to express their disbelief and even indignation over such a disparity in looks between a man and a woman who hook up. ("Fantastical" and "implausible," is how Esquire's Peter Martin put it.)
