When we think of Leonardo da Vinci, if we think of him at all, we tend to picture an old man.

But in the fictionalized series da Vinci's Demons, which makes its Canadian debut Friday on Super Channel, the title character is played by Tom Riley, who is no geezer.

As presented in this historical fantasy, the 20-something da Vinci is bursting with ideas, to the point of inner torture. Sometimes he chooses to dull his mind with opium just to stop it from racing.

But outwardly the young da Vinci is brash and ballsy and super-confident, which he must be to overcome his illegitimate background and get anyone to acknowledge, and finance, his wide array of concepts.

"He (da Vinci) had a big mouth," Riley says. "He could talk people into things.
