Actress Ellen Pompeo has blasted the producers of Sunday’s Emmy Awards over the lack of diversity amongst the performers onstage during a dance tribute.
The Grey’s Anatomy star admits she was “really disappointed” by the 65th annual ceremony, which was hosted by actor Neil Patrick Harris.
Pompeo particularly took exception to the dancers picked for an interpretive routine celebrating some of TV’s biggest shows, including Game of Thrones, Mad Men and Breaking Bad.
She tells the Associated Press, “I didn’t see any diversity in the Emmys at all. The Emmys felt so dated to me... That dance number was embarrassing. Did you see one person of colour in that dance number?”
Pompeo also praised her medical drama Grey’s Anatomy for its multiracial cast, adding, “I’m extremely proud of our very, very diverse cast which represents the world that I walk around in every day.”
But she wasn’t the only star to complain about the telecast - Martha Plimpton tweeted, “Ummmmm... Emmys, when will we dispense with the dance montages? No one likes them, y’all. We’d rather hear from the ppl (people) we’re honoring,” while Jennie Garth wrote, “What is happening... Emmys weird arbitrary dance numbers...”
