There’s a reason John Goodman has hosted “Saturday Night Live” 13 times. The man really knows how to commit to being silly. Last night, that included singing about wanting his wife’s “booty” and riding a puppet camel in the desert with Bob De Niro AND Sly Stallone.

Here are the highlights:

COLD OPEN:

Barack Obama (Jay Pharaoh) is joined by the infamous Nelson Mandela memorial sign language “interpreter” as he attempts to explain the progress of the healthcare.gov website. As the disgraced interpreter, Kenan Thompson really steals the scene, signing Pharaoh’s words as if he were playing a drunken night of charades. When Pharaoh says the word “website,” Thompson pretends to shoot spider webs out of his wrists like Spider-Man and when Pharaoh says he “isn’t thrilled”, Thompson breaks into the zombie dance from Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” video. The best sign of the sketch was when Thompson rubbed his nipples after hearing the words “turned on.”

MONOLOGUE:

Goodman and Thompson, wearing identical suits and ties, dedicate the bluesy jam “All I Want For Christmas Is Booty” to their wives. It’s clear right out of the gate that Goodman is up for anything.

BEST SKETCH:

GUY FIERI’S FOOD NETWORK CHRISTMAS SPECIAL

One of Bobby Moynihan’s funniest impersonations is of celebrity chef Guy Fieri. With his bleached, spiky hair, crazy-coloured shirts, and sunglasses hanging on the back of his head – Fieri’s an easy and obvious target for parody. This time, the goofy connoisseur of greasy, deep-fried man-cave grub, gets his own Christmas special featuring guests he calls “the human equivalent” to the food he makes. Enter Kid Rock, Vern Troyer, Dog the Bounty Hunter and “Mimi” from “The Drew Carey Show.”

SECOND BEST SKETCH:

THE THREE WISE GUYS:

Surprise guests Robert DeNiro and Sylvester Stallone join Goodman on camelback en route to visit the baby Jesus in a manger. They bring gifts of meatball parmesan, and travel the desert in gold chains and track suits.

WORST SKETCH:

SHALLON, AGAIN

It’s the return of Shallon, Nasim Pedrad’s loud-mouthed, precocious elementary school student with the dangerous ideas. We’ve seen this before: A well-meaning authority figure tries to teach the class about safety – only to have their lesson hijacked by Shallon – who convinces the class to do the exact opposite. This time it’s Goodman playing a firefighter and we’re just counting down the minutes until Shallon breaks him – and the viewers – down. The sketch couldn’t end fast enough.

RATING: 3.5 out of 5 stars
