Fifty years ago, the sexiest thing you'd see in mainstream entertainment would be Barbara Eden's bare midriff on I Dream of Jeannie. But as our attitudes about sex and nudity have changed, things have only become hotter. (Take that, climate change deniers!)
In the unlikely event you need proof, here's a sampling of seven sexy shows, scenes and cinematic salaciousness from the past year.
Masters of Sex
How is a show about researchers struggling against rigid sexual taboos so genuinely hot? While the Showtime series about sex pioneers Masters and Johnson (Michael Sheen and Lizzy Caplan) is as nudity-heavy as anything on HBO, the bare bits feel much less exploitative here. And a naked Lizzy Caplan ... wow. Just wow.
Freckled felon Lindsay Lohan hasn't had much good luck in recent years, and this ultra-low budget drama was widely panned by critics. But what little praise it did get was mostly for Lohan's bravery in letting it all hang out in an indie film among unknown actors.
Orange is the New Black
The first season of this Netflix-exclusive series about a well-off white gal (Taylor Schilling) sent to a women's prison would probably have left your grandma speechless - unless your grandma's really cool - but it expertly walked a line between comedy and drama. Plus, you know, shower sex scenes.
Here's a fun True Blood drinking game: watch a season in one sitting, and take a shot every time Sookie Stackhouse (Anna Paquin) shows her boobs. Just make sure someone is there to call an ambulance when you black out from alcohol poisoning. Aside from the usual plethora of breasts and bums and hot couplings, fans of the male form did get a quick full-frontal glimpse of buff vampire Eric (Alexander Skarsgard) in the season finale.
Game of Thrones
Another HBO show, another parade of boobs and butts (and Hodor's big, doughy manhood, which we still can't unsee.) But if there was a single scene that stood out this year, it was when Jon Snow (Kit Harington) and Ygritte (Rose Leslie) consummated their love in a waterfall cave. For a guy who knows nothing, Jon Snow seemed to have things well in hand. And tongue.
Blue is the Warmest Color
The line between art and porn got a little blurry with this much talked-about French film, which won the Palme D'Or at Cannes. But the graphic and unvarnished lesbian sex scenes in the movie helped communicate the passion between lovers Adele (Adele Exarchopoulos) and Emma (Lea Seydoux). And unlike anything in so-called adult entertainment, they actually felt real.
Miley Cyrus knows no shame - or at least no shyness - and she let it all hang out in the video for her song Wrecking Ball, committing a variety of sex acts on helpless pieces of construction equipment. While her twerking partner Robin Thicke had topless models in his video for Blurred Lines, careful editing ensures we don't actually see Miley's naughty bits here. Still, this may have been the most-watched piece of entertainment nakedness in 2013, with more than 400 million views on YouTube.
