A U.S. marine was killed on Saturday during a skydiving trip in Australia that his wife won on The Ellen DeGeneres Show last January.
Gunnery Sgt. Brandon McGraw, 33, of North Carolina, was pronounced dead at the scene after complications during the jump led to a crash landing, according to reports.
His wife, Cherilyn, had made a successful tandem jump with an instructor before Brandon, who was an experienced skydiver, made the dive solo.
An employee at the skydiving school, Euroa Skydive, told TMZ that Brandon’s parachute was veering left and right suddenly before crashing into the ground.
On Thursday, DeGeneres released a statement to Us Weekly addressing the tragedy:
"I've been speaking with Cherilyn. And my staff has been in touch with her as well. She's asked us to help keep this private as she tries to deal with this unimaginable tragedy. I hope everyone respects that."
