'Community' heading in right direction

At least Community is trending in the right direction.

The much-talked-about sitcom returned with back-to-back new episodes Thursday on NBC and City to kick off season No. 5. I liked the second episode way more than I liked the first one.

In fact, at one point in that first episode, Britta (Gillian Jacobs) accused Jeff (Joel McHale) of trying to give the study group “emotional whiplash.” I kind of felt the whiplash effect, too, just from a plot perspective. Jeff is against the school, then he's for it, then he's against it, then he's for it. If it's even possible for a silly sitcom to actually confuse a viewer, Community did its best to achieve it.

But I thought the second episode was much more focused and far better, in no small part due to the addition of actor Jonathan Banks – best known for his role as Mike Ehrmantraut on Breaking Bad – as a grumpy teacher named Buzz Hickey. And I don't know why, but I laughed hard right at the end, when Dean Pelton (Jim Rash) was “thinking” a song in his head, in French, about learning Excel and his longing for Jeff.

Episode two, funnier than episode one. Keep rolling that way, Greendale.
