Saving Sam was the highlight on Thursday night’s results show of American Idol.

The episode, blessedly shrunk to a half-hour, saw the show’s three judges - Keith Urban, Jennifer Lopez and Harry Connick Jr. - use their one save of the season to bring back shy Sam, a favourite of the ladies, who sang for his survival with a pretty tepid version of David Grey’s Babylon.

The bottom three, appropriately it has to be said, were rounded out by crazy Malaya and run-of-the-mill C.J.

Safe out of the gate were country-loving, good ole boy Dexter, big-voiced-and-dark haired Jena, rock belter Caleb, throwback singer Jessica, and quirky Alex.

At least I agree with four out of those five. (Dexter’s never done it for me.)

Also back, and as irritating as ever, were those Ford Fusion ads featuring the remaining eight contestants driving around in them.

Thank God for rock god wannabe Caleb who painted a vivid picture during his segment: “Your girlfirend’s next to you. You’re cruising the streets. We’re going to go make out for three hours and then we’re going to get some pizza.”

Daughtry also performed Waiting For Superman in the lead up to their summer tour with Goo Goo Dolls.

And the theme of next week’s performance show was revealed as “the ‘80s.”

Can we keep our fingers crossed to hear Caleb sing Everybody Wants To Rule The World?
