Jack’s back. And he’s going to paint the town blood red.
The town, in this case, is London, England, a brand new setting for Fox’s resurrected and revitalized 24. Returning as 24: Live Another Day (and in 12 one-hour episodes, rather than its titular two dozen), the series, premiering Monday on Global and Fox, will see conflicted but unwavering counter-terrorist Jack Bauer (Kiefer Sutherland) up to his gun holster in geopolitical shenanigans.
Even the most stalwart fans of 24 will probably admit that the show was declining when it finally went off the air in 2010. But man, there were some moments during its eight-season run that we’ll never forget. If the new 24 can match even a handful of these all-time bests, we’ll definitely be hoping for more than another day.
Best bad guy – Charles Logan
This is a tough call. 24 has had plenty of great villains, and Nina Myers (Sarah Clarke) in particular betrayed Jack in the most shocking way possible in Season 1, ultimately killing his wife. But President Charles Logan (Gregory Itzin) was such a twisty, sneaky scumbag, particularly as the main baddie in Season 5, that he’s the one that lingers in our minds the longest. Want to bet he shows up in Live Another Day?
Best weapon of mass destruction – suitcase nuke
Jack Bauer has had to deal with everything from deadly viruses to nerve gas to actual nuclear bombs. In Season 6, terrorist leader Abu Fayed (Adoni Maropis) managed to detonate a suitcase nuke in Valencia, Calif., wiping out thousands – possibly tens of thousands – of people. Wow, that almost matches Jack’s own body count!
Best setting – NYC
While it flitted here and there across the U.S., 24 was most often set in greater Los Angeles. The final season of the series moved the action to New York City, and although it wasn’t the strongest season of the show, it was refreshing to see Jack knocking around NYC instead of familiar California backdrops. Of course, the red telephone booths and black taxis of London should give 24: Live Another Day its own unique look and feel, eh wot?
Best death – Don’t mess with Chloe
Well, this all depends on your definition of death. Teri Bauer (Leslie Hope) being killed by CTU mole Nina Myers certainly rates as one of the most shocking deaths of the series – heck, one of the most shocking deaths in TV history. But for all the terrorists (and others) that Jack Bauer shot, stabbed and strangled, one of our favourite deaths remains the poor hitman that nerdy, mousy Chloe O’Brian (Mary Lynn Rajskub) gunned down with an assault rifle in Season 4. “The truth is I didn’t feel anything at all,” Chloe said at the time. “I hope I'm not some kind of a psychopath.”
Best Jack Bauer quote – “You’re going to tell me what I want to know. It’s just a question of how much you want it to hurt.”
Though Jack said this in Season 5, it could pretty much be 24’s permanent tagline. Bad guys beware: it’s time to up your medical insurance.
