LOS ANGELES - Kathie Lee Gifford has written “Today: The Musical,” an 18-minute extravaganza expected to air this year.

Will it be the story of a morning shows locked in a rivalry with “Good Morning America,” starring anchors who keep smiling even through off-camera drama? Gifford isn’t uncorking the details just yet. The show was inspired by NBC’s successful “The Sound of Music” and upcoming “Peter Pan” adaptation, starring Allison Williams, daughter of NBC anchor Brian Williams.

Gifford isn’t new to theater by any stretch: She has worked on several plays and musicals, including “Scandalous,” which shut down on Broadway after less than a month in 2012.

Gifford made the “Today” announcement with co-host (and former “Regis & Kathie Lee” co-host) Regis Philbin, who is filling in for Hoda Kotb. Philbin will also guest on “Today: The Musical,” which will feature all the “Today” anchors and crew, Gifford said.

“It’s going to be live and it’s going to be so much fun,” she said.

The musical’s title will be “Not Today and Tomorrow’s Not Looking Good Either.”
