Here's a look at the major categories for the 66th annual Primetime Emmy Awards:

OUTSTANDING DRAMA SERIES

Breaking Bad

Downton Abbey

Game of Thrones

House of Cards

Mad Men

True Detective

Overview: It probably was assumed at one point that this would be a runaway victory for the final season of Breaking Bad, even as a sign of respect for past services (Mad Men will be in the same boat next year). But True Detective has thrown a dramatic wrench into that machinery.

What will win: Breaking Bad

Possibility: True Detective

Up to me? True Detective

OUTSTANDING LEAD ACTOR DRAMA

Bryan Cranston, Breaking Bad

Kevin Spacey, House of Cards

Jon Hamm, Mad Men

Jeff Daniels, The Newsroom

Woody Harrelson, True Detective

Matthew McConaughey, True Detective

Overview: Matthew McConaughey's performance was so good in True Detective that it's overshadowing his castmate Woody Harrelson, who was equally brilliant in that series. But there can be only one winner at the Emmys, cliches about the honour of being nominated aside.

Who will win: Matthew McConaughey

Possibility: Bryan Cranston

Up to me? Matthew McConaughey

OUTSTANDING LEAD ACTRESS DRAMA

Michelle Dockery, Downton Abbey

Claire Danes, Homeland

Robin Wright, House of Cards

Lizzy Caplan, Masters of Sex

Kerry Washington, Scandal

Julianna Margulies, The Good Wife

Overview: I was thrilled to see Lizzy Caplan nominated for the first season of Masters of Sex. I haven't liked the second season as much, but that's column fodder for another day. With The Good Wife still relevant in its fifth season, voters likely will lean toward the veteran.

Who will win: Julianna Margulies

Possibility: Robin Wright

Up to me? Lizzy Caplan

OUTSTANDING COMEDY SERIES

Louie

Modern Family

Orange is the New Black

Silicon Valley

The Big Bang Theory

Veep

Overview: To me the funniest show on TV is Veep. But it just isn't as buzzworthy as Orange is the New Black, a Netflix original. That means we all get to feel like cool kids when we watch it online. Modern Family's best days are behind it, but it still can be a force at awards time.

What will win: Orange is the New Black

Possibility: Modern Family

Up to me? Veep

OUTSTANDING LEAD ACTOR COMEDY

Ricky Gervais, Derek

Matt LeBlanc, Episodes

Don Cheadle, House of Lies

Louis C.K., Louie

William H. Macy, Shameless

Jim Parsons, The Big Bang Theory

Overview: Is it just me, or is this kind of weak? Nothing against the six men who are nominated, but none of them jumps out at me as having had particularly great years. The Big Bang Theory still is TV's top comedy, though, so that has to be worth something in a coin toss.

Who will win? Jim Parsons

Possibility: Ricky Gervais

Up to me? Jim Parsons

OUTSTANDING LEAD ACTRESS COMEDY

Lena Dunham, Girls

Melissa McCarthy, Mike & Molly

Edie Falco, Nurse Jackie

Taylor Schilling, Orange is the New Black

Amy Poehler, Parks and Recreation

Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Veep

Overview: There's really no contest in this category for me, as Julia Louis-Dreyfus continues to make me howl as U.S. vice-president – whoops, make that president! - Selina Meyer. But Taylor Schilling will get some votes, too, and she is on the hotter show right now.

Who will win: Julia Louis-Dreyfus

Possibility: Taylor Schilling

Up to me? Julia Louis-Dreyfus

OUTSTANDING MINI-SERIES

American Horror Story: Coven

Bonnie and Clyde

Fargo

Luther

The White Queen

Treme

Overview: I loved Fargo, and it'll stand alone now, as the decision has been made to return with an entirely new tale and an entirely new cast. And just as a side note, even though it has no chance to win here, The White Queen was excellent and deserved a bigger audience.

What will win: Fargo

Possibility: American Horror Story: Coven

Up to me? Fargo

OUTSTANDING TV MOVIE

Killing Kennedy

Muhammad Ali's Greatest Fight

Sherlock: His Last Vow

The Normal Heart

The Trip to Bountiful

Overview: This really should be combined with the mini-series nominations. After all, the actors and actresses are bundled into “mini-series or movie” divisions. And the fact that they could come up with only five nominees here should be a giant red flag.

What will win: The Normal Heart

Possibility: Sherlock: His Last Vow

Up to me? Abolish the category

OUTSTANDING LEAD ACTOR MINI-SERIES OR MOVIE

Chiwetel Ejiofor, Dancing on the Edge

Martin Freeman, Fargo

Billy Bob Thornton, Fargo

Idris Elba, Luther

Benedict Cumberbatch, Sherlock: His Last Vow

Mark Ruffalo, The Normal Heart

Overview: Much like Matthew McConaughey overshadowing the equally deserving Woody Harrelson in True Detective, Billy Bob Thornton has overshadowed his equally deserving Fargo castmate Martin Freeman. Why one is a mini-series and one is a drama series, only the TV Gods know.

Who will win: Billy Bob Thornton

Possibility: Mark Ruffalo

Up to me? Billy Bob Thornton

OUTSTANDING LEAD ACTRESS MINI-SERIES OR MOVIE

Jessica Lange, American Horror Story: Coven

Sarah Paulson, American Horror Story: Coven

Helena Bonham Carter, Burton and Taylor

Minnie Driver, Return to Zero

Kristen Wiig, The Spoils of Babylon

Cicely Tyson, The Trip to Bountiful

Overview: I always admire American Horror Story, because it's the one show on television that I can't predict. I saw Return to Zero, but didn't think it was particularly award-worthy. Have to be honest, I didn't see the other ones. But that kind of says something right there.

Who will win: Cicely Tyson

Possibility: Jessica Lange

Up to me: Jessica Lange
