What was it that onetime contestant Jennifer Hudson was saying recently about American Idol?: "Go out on top?"

The producers of the shows don't seem to be taking her advice.

Now in its fourth week of Season 12 - contestants who got through early auditions are in Hollywood Wednesday night, fighting for the top 40 spots split evenly between males and females - the increasingly tiresome singing competition hasn't benefited from the supposed feud between duelling divas and new judges Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj .

The catfight seems to have been completely overblown, with the focus still more on that than any promising new talent, with apologies to last week's yodelling ventriloquist Halie.
